With the sudden demise of “Dear Leader” Kim Jong Il there has been a reshuffling of the cards on the Korean Peninsula.
The North Korean media have already trumpeted to the world that his successor Kim Jong-un has been recognized by the military as the new supreme leader of the armed forces.
The neighboring countries and the rest of the world are now awaiting the first moves of the new North Korean leader, who, at 28 years of age, has his finger on the trigger of at least 5 nuclear bombs–to the dismay of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which has already asked to be allowed in for an inspection of the Yongbyon nuclear facility.
Observers are speculating over a possible sharing of power within the ruling family, an arrangement resembling that of the famous “gang of four” which once ruled China, lightening the load for the young and inexperienced Kim Jong-un in matters relating to defense and international relations.
The video is entitled “Enigma,” three minutes meant to remind us that in North Korea nothing is as it seems, and it offers original images of the Supreme People’s Assembly, which gathers once a year to discuss international affairs and defense matters. The building, erected in classic Soviet style, consists of 40 thousand square meters of green marble on four floors; the statues which adorn the main corridor leading to the plenary meeting room are all symbols of the Juche ideology that underpins the regime. In the 687-member Parliament sit four parties, which together support–usually with a
99% majority–the government, made up by nine generals and four ministers, under the leadership of the new Secretary General of the Workers’ Party, Kim Jong-un. A large statue of North Korea’s founding father Kim il Sung watches over the proceedings.
In the final segment of the video, filmed during a flower show in Pyongyang in 2006, there appear the figures of Kim Jong-nam, President of the Supreme Court, and of Jang Song-Thaek, Kim Jong Il’s brother-in-law, who is emerging as one of most powerful men in Kim Jong-un‘s Korea.
